“Further material on the burial place of the Jochid khans not cited by Bartol'd was mentioned by Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall in his history of the Golden Horde; here and more fully in an earlier review of literature on the Black Sea littoral he notes that the Venetian map of Francesco Pizzigani, dated 1367, labels a point on the Yayïq/Ural river ‘Tarcel, i.e. Sepulchrum Imperatorum, qui decedunt circa flumen de Sera,’ that is, ‘Torcel, the tomb of the emperors who die near the river of Saray,’ a clear reference to the khans of the Jöchid ulus. The map referred to by Hammer-Purgstall is one of two well-known maps done by Francesco and Marco Pizzigani in Venice, one a large chart dating from 1367 and the other a ‘portolano’ or set of nautical maps produced in 1373; the latter has been more extensively described, and contains a detailed chart of the Black Sea, but does not appear to include the north coast of the Caspian Sea. It is thus the production of 1367 to which Hammer-Purgstall must have referred, but in any case, it seems reasonable to assume that both cartographic productions of the Pizzigani brothers reflect the same sources of information, and in view of the well-known Venetian role in the Black Sea commerce with the Golden Horde, and of the map’s early date, the Pizzigani map is of considerable importance in establishing the early currency of the notion that the Jöchid tombs were near Saraychïq”.

Теперь, имея под рукой отличную копию карты Франческо Пицигано, можно указать на ряд необоснованых утверждений Девина ДеВиза.

Напомню, что это копия 1802 года, но все же лучше, чем ничего, и даже намного лучше. В особенности в связи с тем, что ДеВиз не видел оригинала (“it is of course difficult to judge without access to the chart itself,”, p. 196, note 90).

В первую очередь сама надпись на данной копии читается так: “torcal id est sepurlcra Jnperatorum qui decedunt citra flumen de sara” = «Торкал, то есть могилы императоров, которые умирают с этой стороны реки Сарая».

Во-вторых, расположение соответствующего строения явно указывает на то, что это не Сарайчик. Оно очевидным образом не находится на реке Яик. На карте Яик (flumen de Iaych) указан как чрезвычайно короткая река, впадающая в Каспий. Место ханских захорений же находится значительно дальше на северо-восток. 

И наконец, я вообще не отважился бы определять расположение этих захоронений на основе данной карты.
